BLOG: Brave recruits Ryan ‘FanBoy’ Brown, top maintainer of EasyList & EasyPrivacy, FanBoy Adblock Lists, to help support growth of ad blocking/tracker filter lists and web privacy community
Brave will be supporting the Web privacy community by funding and supporting the growth and maintenance of tracking and advertising blocking filter lists. Brave uses many such lists, some of which Brave maintains, some developed through online communities (EasyList and EasyPrivacy), and some generated by other terrific Web privacy activists. Filter lists help prevent websites from sharing your information with advertisers and trackers, make websites load faster, and save you data.
Brave will be contracting with Ryan Brown (aka “FanBoy” of “Fanboy Adblock Lists”) to support his work maintaining EasyList and EasyPrivacy. Ryan is currently the top committer to these lists, and has been maintaining them as a volunteer.

Brendan comments on Google’s “cleanest” ad model, and possibly blocking it.
BrendanEich @BrendanEich @wchristiansen @Yellow_Bit_Road @brave We will add an option. We block their tracking capabilities and some find them useful. Best and cleanest ad model Google ever did. Jun 07 2019
Can YouTube demonetize a Brave Creator?
BrendanEich @BrendanEich @cryptodotbi @brave Nope, they can’t touch us – we connect user to creator directly. But we can definitely help creators who drive their fans to convert from Chrome to Brave. See https://t.co/YYe9LCTt8i Jun 07 2019
Ads coming to Android “very soon” and then iOS.
Vimeo is on the list of creators to support!
**Does Brave censor? **
BrendanEich @BrendanEich @SpotlightNewsUK If anyone registers a domain name, we verify that domain control via a protocol. Such a site must comply with laws. Otherwise we don’t censor what the DNS allows. See https://t.co/wk5G5uuuXs (thread). If you know of a verified site violating terms, please DM me specifics. Thanks. Jun 09 2019
Brave Extensions on… A Brave Web Store?
BrendanEich @BrendanEich @axel_advento @brave We don’t have any Google accounts code in Brave, it’s not required for most extensions. I have 1Password installed, for example, and I never logged into the Chrome Web Store. We will be improving the extension install process in steps, which I bet will lead to a Brave Web Store. Three MILLION ads blocked.
So, Brave’s an ad blocker that pays you to unblock ads? No. Sampson explains how Brave works in detailed series of tweets:
Sampson @BraveSampson @thehuli @JustinBilyj @brave Not quite. Today’s digital advertising has tracking baked-in, by design. Plus, the process of Real-Time Bidding auctions you off to the highest bidder within a 100ms of visiting a site (usually happens multiple times per page). We stand firmly against that practice. Continued… Jun 09 2019
Sampson @BraveSampson @thehuli @JustinBilyj @brave Brave blocks those harmful trackers by default. Unblocking them puts you at risk. Brave Ads are a separate advertising system altogether. It is uses machine-learning on your device to study your interests (never sharing that data with anybody). Continued…
@thehuli @JustinBilyj @brave Today’s ads target you by harvesting your information, spreading it liberally across a sea of third-parties, and more. That’s how they learn so much about you. Brave inverted the model. Data stays on your device; advertisers send ads via a catalog to your computer. Continued… Jun 09 2019
Sampson @BraveSampson @thehuli @JustinBilyj @brave Your device (if you have opted in) studies this catalog for relevant ad entries. If and when it finds one, it will prompt you via an OS notification. If you engage, the ad from that catalog opens in its own browser tab, and you collect 70% of the revenue. Jun 09 2019

BAT/Brave in the News:
Brendan shows up in Mary Meeker’s 2019 Internet Trends Report
Security and regulation such as GDPR and California’s Consumer Privacy Act are also playing a role in the slow down. “Privacy consciousness is rising and the tech industry is making changes on that front, but privacy by default is increasingly required by lead users,” Brendan Eich, CEO and co-founder of Brave, says. “As users become more aware of surveillance capitalism, solutions that put the user first will reshape the landscape.” Check this quote out as well as the rest of the article here:
News You Should Know:
Opera, Brave, Vivaldi to ignore Chrome’s anti-ad-blocker changes, despite shared codebase
Despite sharing a common Chromium codebase, browser makers like Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi don’t have plans on crippling support for ad blocker extensions in their products – as Google is currently planning on doing within Chrome.
Google: We’re not killing ad blockers. Translation: We made them too powerful, we’ll cram this genie back in its bottle
Google’s extension team makes a more general claim that one aspect of a powerful API in particular, the content filtering capability of webRequest, poses potential security and privacy problems. This interface is used by blockers to inspect requests for page content so they can kill off any unwanted stuff in real-time. However, it is proposed that this API will in future be off-limits to extensions for the likes of you and me, to prevent plugins from turning against their users to spy on them or tamper with page data.
Yet Google will allow this capability to stand for enterprise-managed extensions “because of the deep integrations that enterprises may have between their software suites and Chrome.” Google fails to explain why enterprise administrators using Chrome can be trusted to make their own security decisions but ordinary folks using Chrome cannot.
Internal emails suggest Zuckerberg was aware of Facebook privacy issues: report
Facebook has turned over internal emails to regulators that appear to show that CEO Mark Zuckerberg was at least partially aware of third parties amassing user data from the social network, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The Journal, citing people familiar with the emails, said that documents handed over to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) show Zuckerberg’s close involvement in addressing third-party data collection on Facebook’s platform.
John Andrews @JohnAndrewsX You surf the net, get paid @AttentionToken Crypto for advertising and you can donate the revenue to the content creators. My opinion: Simply the best browser for Streamer & Gamer. And on top: #private, #secure and fast browsing! Smells like future, happens now. @brave #Brave Jun 12 2019
