BLOG: Highlights from Holli Bohren’s BAT Community AMA

Brave’s most recent AMA took place on March 27th and featured Holli Bohren, Brave’s Chief Financial Officer. Holli fielded both pre-submitted and live questions from Redditors concerning a variety of topics, like what a “successful exit” looks like in her view, whether Brave employees’ salaries are paid in BAT, and how the company plans to use the BAT generated as revenue from its advertising platform. In between demonstrations of her prowess as a financier, Holli shared tidbits about her personal life: she is a self-professed reading addict who enjoys listening to whatever music her teenage kids are into at the moment.

BLOG: The Economist’s “Data protection-free zone” diagram of online ad auctions

As The Economist writes, the IAB and Google’s “Real-time bidding” ad auction system “builds in incentives to get as much data to as many bidders as feasible. And that is not particularly conducive to the protection of privacy.”

The adtech companies, including supply-side platforms, advertising exchanges, and demand-side platforms, participate in what The Economist calls a “data protection-free zone” (see diagram in the article).

A second piece in The Economist this same week estimates that: “the amount of data involved is far greater than that lost to hacking or carelessness in one-off data breaches”.

Evolution of tech?

BrendanEich @BrendanEich @rauchg @mikeal “No one will take that language seriously.” “It can’t be fast. It can’t be fixed.” “Browsers are dead, Microsoft won, IE forever, don’t bother.” “Browsers are dead, Google won, Chrome forever, don’t bother.” “Privacy doesn’t matter. Brave will be auditable from funding to settlement on-chain.

BrendanEich @BrendanEich @sam_feldman_ @Raavasuu Just as it would be hard for Apple (or Google who followed same split) to reduce 70% app store share – but they could improve that in app’s favor – so we are on record, and we will be auditable in macro-flows from funding to settlement on-chain, as sharing 70% with user / pubs. Mar 24 2019

How many monthly active users does Brave have now?

BrendanEich @BrendanEich @cryptochaindata @brave Approx. 5.8M but will confirm in a week plus few days. Mar 24 2019

Could you use BAT to pay for Apple News+?

What does Brave have access to? And, how do you match users with ads?

Sampson@BraveSampson Replying to @LarissaMVLopez @coinasaurus and 3 others

Hello, Larissa! Brave Software doesn’t have access to your browsing history. We also would never sell your data (again, no desire, and no access). Brave Ads is opt-in only, and completely client-side. It operates on your device, never leaking data to anybody. ½ Mar 23

Sampson @BraveSampson Replying to @BraveSampson @LarissaMVLopez and 4 others

When you opt into Brave Ads a catalog of ads is downloaded to your device. Your computer then privately studies this list to see if any are relevant. If it finds one, it will offer it to you. If you choose to view it, you get 70% of the revenue. No data leaves your device. 2/2 Mar 23 2019
